The Boston Architectural College (BAC) and Tufts University have joined forces as Team Boston to compete in the 2009 Solar Decathlon. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratories (NREL) sponsor this biannual competition in which twenty teams showcase fully operational, energy-efficient, marketable, solar-powered homes to the public on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
The 2007 Solar Decathlon Competition brought 250,000 visitors to the ‘Solar Village’ on the National Mall to view the latest in green design. The competition also generated over 1 billion media hits worldwide. The 2009 competition is expected to receive even more attention, and our unique and relevant approach will put our project on center stage. For three weeks in October 2009, the U.S. Department of Energy will host the Solar Decathlon—a competition in which 20 teams of college and university students compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered house. The Solar Decathlon is also an event to which the public is invited to observe the powerful combination of solar energy, energy efficiency, and the best in home design.
